Diagnostic Parasitology
DEPARTMENT OF PARASITOLOGY COLLEGE OF PUBLIC HEALTH
University of the Philippines Manila
The Health Sciences Center
May 12 – 16, 2008
Introduction
Accurate laboratory diadnosis is an essential first step in dealing with parasitic disease both at the level of the individual patient and the community.
Classic methods are the mainstay of laboratory dianosis. These require a high level of expertise to ensure reliability.
The new powerful tools of biochemistry, immunology and molecular biology complement microscopic diagnosis.
This 5-day intensive course on diagnostic parasitology aims to review, update and strengthen the knowledge and skills of health rpofessionals involved in teaching, research and diagnostic work dealing with parasitic diseases.
Course Objective
- Identify the important morphologic feature used in the identification of parasites and medically important arthropods;
- Perform various conventional and advance laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis of parasitic infections for clinical and research applications;
- Demonstrate specific methods and procedures for collection, preservation and processing of parasitic speciemns; and
- Understand the lates concept s regarding the epidemiology, diagnosis and quality assurance, treatment and control of parasituc infections.
