Aims

At the end of the course, participants will be able to

 

  1. To improve participants knowledge of the management of severe and uncomplicated malaria in the well-equipped hospital and in places with limited facilities
  2. To update knowledge of anti-malarial drugs used in treating severe malaria
  3. To review, and train participants in, the laboratory diagnosis of malaria
  4. To ensure that participants understand the recent pathogenesis of malaria

  2. Malaria: global epidemiology and current situation
  3. Malaria diagnosis and treatment at field level
  4. Malaria control programs
  5. Diagnosis and management of severe and uncomplicated malaria
  6. Pathophysiology of malaria and severe malaria
  7. Pathology: gross, light and electron microscopy of falciparum malaria
  8. Guidelines for diagnosis and assessment of severe malaria
  9. Immunology of severe malaria
  10. Anti-malarial drug treatment
  11. Management of cerebral malaria
  12. Management of renal failure, metabolic and electrolyte disturbance
  13. Management of pulmonary edema
  14. Management of other complications of malaria
  15. Management of severe malaria in children and during pregnancy
  16. Management of severe malaria in areas with limited facilities
