Identification of Adult Mosquitoes

Aims

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

 

  1. Demonstrate practical experience of a range of techniques used in the identification and incrimination of arthropod vectors
  2. Explain the importance of accurate vector identification in surveillance and control
  3. Know the appropriate sampling methods for the major groups of vectors
  4. Demonstrate practical entomological techniques used in vector identification and incrimination
  5. Identify adult mosquitoes to the species level

 

 

Content

  1. Biology and identification of all mosquito vectors
  2. Mosquito-collection techniques
  3. Specimen preparation for identification
  4. Morphological keys; DNA techniques for vector identification; cytotaxonomy
  5. Recognition of the morphology of the adult mosquito for identification
  6. Recognition of the mosquito genera
  7. Identification of mosquito species, using standard dichotomous keys
