Aims
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate practical experience of a range of techniques used in the identification and incrimination of arthropod vectors
- Explain the importance of accurate vector identification in surveillance and control
- Know the appropriate sampling methods for the major groups of vectors
- Demonstrate practical entomological techniques used in vector identification and incrimination
- Identify adult mosquitoes to the species level
Content
- Biology and identification of all mosquito vectors
- Mosquito-collection techniques
- Specimen preparation for identification
- Morphological keys; DNA techniques for vector identification; cytotaxonomy
- Recognition of the morphology of the adult mosquito for identification
- Recognition of the mosquito genera
- Identification of mosquito species, using standard dichotomous keys
