Tropical Epidemiology

Course Description

This training course covers an orientation on the standards, ethics, tools, procedures and guidelines for Good Clinical Practice. The training will be conducted using didactic, practical and experiential learning exercises in the discussion of the various topics as well as in the learning application. The exercises will cover applications, issues, problems and violations of Good Clinical Practice Guidelines. The workshop will also harness the cooperative spirit and team values of the different players involved in clinical trials. This workshop hopes to advocate public safety through vigilant reporting of adverse events even beyond the clinical trial periods.

 

 

Course Objectives      

 At the end of the course the participants should be able to:

 

  1. Describe the epidemiologic concepts that serve as bases for the prevention and control of tropical diseases;
  2. Explain the epidemiologic tools and strategies for
    1. determining the magnitude and determinants of tropical diseases as well as the impact of illness
    2. monitoring and evaluating prevention and control measures for tropical diseases and health service delivery
    3. determining validity and reliability of measuring population data
    4. assessing biases in epidemiological data and the methods for minimizing these biases;
  3. Describe the epidemiology of tropical diseases, their prevention and control;
  4. Explain and compute the various health and development indicators;
  5. Explain the various statistical methods for analyzing, interpreting and presenting health data;
  6. Discuss research methods in health and medicine; critically appraise published article; prepare a research proposal;
  7. Describe the guidelines in manuscript preparation;
  8. Describe use of epidemiological data in health policy and administration; and
  9. Discuss health financing specifically cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis.
