General Objectives

To acquire knowledge about mycotic diseases of medical importance with emphasis on disease epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis and laboratory diagnosis.

 

 

Course Objective

  • Identify the important morphologic feature used in the identification of parasites and medically important arthropods;
  • Perform various conventional and advance laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis of parasitic infections for clinical and research applications;
  • Demonstrate specific methods and procedures for collection, preservation and processing of parasitic speciemns; and
  • Understand the lates concept s regarding the epidemiology, diagnosis and quality assurance, treatment and control of parasituc infections.

 

 

Specific Objectives

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

  1. Identify the etiologic agents of superficial, cutaneous, subcutaneous, systemic and opportunistic mycoses.
  2. Identify and describe the clinical disease for each of the mycoses discussed.
  3. Describe the colonial and microscopic morphology of common fungal agents.
  4. Describe the proper methods for specimen collection.
  5. Perform appropriate laboratory procedures for direct examinationisolation and identification of fungal agents.
  6. Interpret laboratory findings.
  7. Name and discuss the mechanismof action of drugs used to treat fungal infections.
  8. Practice safety precautions in the laboratory.

  2. Diagnostic Mycology
  3. Superficial Mycoses
  4. Cutaneous Mycoses
  5. Subcutaneous Mycoses
  6. Systemic Mycoses
  7. Opportunistic Mycoses
  8. Immunology of Mycotic Infections
  9. In-vitro sensitivity testing of anti-fungal drugs

 

The course consists of lecture (8:30-12:00nn) and laboratory (1:30-5:00 p.m.) sessions, TWF. Written and practical examinations will be administered at the end of the course. Based on the results of the examinations, qualified participants will be awarded Certificates of Participation/Attendance.

 

 

LABORATORY SESSIONS

  1. Isolation and identification of fungi in the environment
  2. Study of superficial fungal elements
  3. Study of dermatophytes
  4. KOH Mount
  5. In-vitro hair culture
  6. Sutdy of Sporothrix schenckii, and agents of chromoblastomycosis
  7. Study of Candida albicans: germ tube test and API test for yeast identification
  8. Study of agents of systemic mycoses (Cryptococcus neoformans, Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomycoses dermatidis, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, and Coccidioides immitis)
  9. Study of contaminants and agents of opportunistic mycoses

    Each participant may also perform fungal culture and isolation for a patient with suspected cutaneous mycoses for free.
