General Objectives
To acquire knowledge about mycotic diseases of medical importance with emphasis on disease epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis and laboratory diagnosis.
Course Objective
- Identify the important morphologic feature used in the identification of parasites and medically important arthropods;
- Perform various conventional and advance laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis of parasitic infections for clinical and research applications;
- Demonstrate specific methods and procedures for collection, preservation and processing of parasitic speciemns; and
- Understand the lates concept s regarding the epidemiology, diagnosis and quality assurance, treatment and control of parasituc infections.
Specific Objectives
At the end of the course, the student
should be able to:
- Identify the etiologic agents of superficial, cutaneous, subcutaneous, systemic and opportunistic mycoses.
- Identify and describe the clinical disease for each of the mycoses discussed.
- Describe the colonial and microscopic morphology of common fungal agents.
- Describe the proper methods for specimen collection.
- Perform appropriate laboratory procedures for direct examinationisolation and identification of fungal agents.
- Interpret laboratory findings.
- Name and discuss the mechanismof action of drugs used to treat fungal infections.
- Practice safety precautions in the laboratory.

The course consists of lecture (8:30-12:00nn) and laboratory (1:30-5:00 p.m.) sessions, TWF. Written and practical examinations will be administered at the end of the course. Based on the results of the examinations, qualified participants will be awarded Certificates of Participation/Attendance.
LABORATORY SESSIONS
- Isolation and identification of fungi in the environment
- Study of superficial fungal elements
- Study of dermatophytes
- KOH Mount
- In-vitro hair culture
- Sutdy of Sporothrix schenckii, and agents of chromoblastomycosis
- Study of Candida albicans: germ tube test and API test for yeast identification
- Study of agents of systemic mycoses (Cryptococcus neoformans, Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomycoses dermatidis, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, and Coccidioides immitis)
- Study of contaminants and agents of opportunistic mycoses
Each participant may also perform fungal culture and isolation for a patient with suspected cutaneous mycoses for free.
